HONIARA, Solomon Islands (November 12, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The Vanuatu government has given approval for the Solomon Islands' air freight carrier, Pacific Air Express, to extend its services to Port Vila.

The company's managing director, Gary Clifford, says the development follows a successful visit to Vanuatu by PAE's management during which the service proposal was made, the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Commission reports.

The Vanuatu government, Clifford says, has invited the airline to apply for a license, which will permit the freight carrier to operate between Vanuatu and both Australia and the Solomon Islands.

The airline plans to start the new weekly service in December.

Clifford says Pacific Air Express has also approached the Papua New Guinea government for approval to operate a Port Moresby-Honiara route.

He says the freight service provided by the airline supports the regional trade objectives of the Melanesian Spearhead Group.
