SUVA, Fiji (November 16, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Civil servants in Fiji will receive a pay increase as the result of agreements reached last week between public sector unions and the Fiji Public Service Commission.

The pay increase -- to be backdated to January 1 -- is anticipated to be made formal when the Fiji cabinet meets on Tuesday, The Fiji Times newspaper reports.

Fiji Trades Union Congress Secretary General Pratap Chand confirmed the settlement, adding that the public sector unions are relieved.

The settlement provides that all civil service grade five and below employees will receive three percent increases. A 2.5 percent rise will be awarded to all employees grade four and above.

Cost of living adjustment pay increases for 1998 and 1999 will be three percent for all grades.
