MANILA, Philippines (November 19, 1997 - Radio Australia)---An agreement to link the U.S. Micronesian territory of Guam with the Philippines by fibre-optic cable was signed in Manila Tuesday.

The planned cable, when constructed, will provide a direct communications connection between Asian facilities terminating in the Philippines and various Pacific cable systems routed to Guam, permitting a future direct cable link between the Asian continent and the United States mainland.

The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company said in a statement that the state-of-the-art submarine cable facility should be ready by March 1999 to serve telephone, internet and other international communications users.
