COOK ISLANDS HIT BY CYCLONE PAM

RAROTONGA, Cook Islands (December 8, 1997 - Radio Australia)---The southern Cook Islands group has been hit by Cyclone Pam, bringing with it rain and winds gusting up to 90 miles an hour.

So far, there have been no reports of serious damage or casualties.

As a precaution, fishing boats were removed from dock areas on the main island of Rarotonga, and cargo containers were taken from the main harbor at Avarua and moved inland. The Rarotonga airport also has been closed.

It is the third cyclone to hit the eastern Pacific since the cyclone season began six week ago. Last month, Cyclone Martin hit the Cook Islands and neighboring French Polynesia, leaving 29 people dead or missing.
