SUVA, Fiji (December 7, Radio Australia)---Fiji's Emperor Gold Mining Company, at its Vatukoula mine, has cut its 2,200 strong workforce by 350.

General Manager Charles Barclay says this decision is the result of a continuing drop in the price of gold.

Employees affected, Barclay says, are at all levels, including senior management.

The company has offered a voluntary lay-off package of two months' salary plus free housing and electricity for six months to all local employees. Similar benefits will be provided the company's expatriate workers.
