TONGA’S TALIAI MILITARY CAMP RE-COMMISSIONED

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (December 8, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Tonga's main military base, Taliai Military Camp, on the main island of Tongatapu, has been re-commissioned following the completion of a major re-development project.

The project was co-financed by the Australian government under its defense cooperation program with Tonga, Radio Tonga reports.

Speaking at the re-commissioning ceremony, Tonga's King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV praised the Australian government for continuing to support the defense relationship between the two countries, which dates back to World War I. He said cooperation had grown tremendously, resulting in many mutual defense assistance programs for Tonga, including the provision of patrol boats and the re-development of Taliai Camp.
