APIA, Samoa (December 12, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Samoa's Prime Minister, Tofilau Eti Alesana, told protesters yesterday in the capital of Apia that they have no authority to call for his resignation and that only "God has that authority."

"If I feel a whisper from the spirit of God (that says), Tofilau, resign, then I will resign," he told up to 5,000 people who took part in the protest march. The marchers were demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister over the rising cost of living and alleged corruption in government.

Tofilau also revealed that a pro-government march, "the size of which the country has never seen," will be held December 19.

Yesterday’s march was the second since October by a chiefly group calling itself Tumua ma Pule ma Aina.

The group leaders plan to continue holding protest marches until Tofilau’s government resigns.
