AGANA, Guam (December 16, 1997 - PIDP/CPIS)---Super Typhoon Paka blasted across the northern part of Guam last night and this morning with heavy rain and sustained winds of 150 miles an hour. Some wind gusts were measured at more than 175 miles an hour.

Several homes were destroyed at the height of the storm and at least three people were hospitalized, but there are not reports of deaths.

About 900 people had crowded into the island’s public school buildings for safety, and Guam Memorial Hospital administrator Tyrone Taitano said 86 pregnant women checked into the hospital as a precaution. At last report, five already had given birth.

Electrical service is reported to continue to be erratic.

Typhoon Paka also grazed Rota in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
