SUVA, Fiji (December 15, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The medical superintendent of Fiji's Colonial War Memorial Hospital, Doctor Mary Schraam, believes the use of traditional medicine could be hampering the fight against Sexually Transmitted Disease.

Doctor Schraam, a senior gynecologist, says using Fijian herbs as a treatment to STD can cause complications, Radio Fiji reports.

She says seeking a cure from traditional medicine is only one of several factors singled out as the reasons for the prevalence of STD. Doctor Schraam believes the fight against syphilis and other STD can only be effective if society pitches in and changes its sexual behavior.

Meanwhile, figures released by the Ministry of Health show that 150 women died from cervical cancer in Fiji last year. A consultant gynecologist believes more women will die with cervical cancer unless the country finds more money and the political will to fight the disease.
