GONORRHEA CASES INCREASE IN FIJI’S CAPITAL OF SUVA

SUVA, FIJI (December 17, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The 1996 Suva City Council annual report has revealed a disturbing increase in gonorrhea cases in the Fiji capital compared to 1995.

Of the 1,562 cases reported in Fiji last year, 1,024, or 65.5 percent, were identified in the Suva urban area. This is an increase of 20.6 percent, compared to 1995 figures, The Fiji Time reports.

In 1994, 851 cases were reported in the Suva urban area, compared to 690 in 1993.

For syphilis, there was a decrease in the number of 1996 reported cases. 0f the total 896 cases reported in Fiji last year, 453 cases, or 50.4 percent, were identified in Suva, a decrease of 13.9 percent over 1995.
