SUVA, Fiji (December 21, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Fiji police will begin passenger checks aboard inter-island vessels and aircraft on domestic flights as part of intensified efforts to crack down on drug smuggling.

Police Commissioner Isikia Savua says the expanded search plan will begin early next year, and will involve specially trained dogs capable of detecting marijuana and other drugs by their smell.

Announcement of the plan follows discovery of a bundle of marijuana on the inter-island vessel Princess Ashika. A 42-year old Kadavu villager has been arrested in connection with the drug find.
