PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (December 22, 1997 - PACNEWS)--- Lady Chan, the wife of former Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan, is recovering at the Port Moresby General Hospital after being attacked at Ela Beach, Port Moresby, Friday morning.

Lady Chan, among many other early morning joggers and strollers, regularly walks along the beach front soon after sunrise, The National reports.

On Friday, she was attacked at about 5.45 a.m. after parking her car. An eyewitness, a nearby resident, said a gang of at least five men, was involved. The eye witness said theft did not appear to be the motive, and stones were thrown as the car finally sped off.

Lady Chan was admitted to the PMGH intermediate ward and was under medication most of the weekend. A hospital source said she has recovered sufficiently to be talking and eating but is still under considerable pain from the attack.

She is reported to be in a stable condition.

A nursing sister said Lady Chan received bruises to her body.
