NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (December 23, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Police in Tonga will mount an expanded crackdown on traffic offenders during the Christmas and New Year holidays, in an effort to reduce an increasing number of road accidents.

Code named Operation Maeakafa, after a late Police Superintendent, the project will cover the whole of Tonga, Radio Tonga reports.

One hundred and fifty officers will be involved in the crackdown on the main island of Tongatapu alone.

As the festive holidays approached, police began issuing warnings to drivers and vehicle owners about the holiday project, encouraging them not to break the law for their own safety.

Warnings also have been made to Tonga’s boat owners.
