APIA, Samoa (December 23, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Samoan Central Bank governor Papalii Tommy Scanlan says fish has become the country's top export commodity for the first time, with export earnings this year attaining pre-cyclone levels of the early 1990s.

Rapid diversification and expansion are the reasons for the Samoan fishing industry’s current success, he noted.

Papalii said during the past two years, 1995 - 1996, export income recorded a three-fold increase, from $3.22 million to $8.84 million, and that " during the first 10 months of this year, it grew by another 47 per cent."
