PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (January 1, 1998 - Radio Australia)--- Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Bill Skate has been honored by Britain's Queen Elizabeth in her New Year's Honors List.

Skate has been made a Companion of The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George.

Skate recently was embroiled in a scandal after a secret video tape, broadcast in Australia, showed him claiming to be the "godfather" of crime in P-N-G. The scandal prompted calls for Skate's resignation, but he has denied the allegations and appears to have successfully weathered the political crisis.

Three other prominent men in PNG have been knighted by the Queen.

Papua New Guinea's Auditor-General Makena Geno, businessman Michael Bromley and Leith Anderson, the former Director General of the National Disaster and Emergency Services, were all honored for their public service contributions.
