FIRE CASE

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (January 5, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Solomon Islands police have offered a reward of $US2,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for the burning of the Ministry of Finance building in Honiara last November.

Police Commissioner Frank Short said the financial reward is an incentive to further assist police in their investigation of the fire which caused millions of dollars in damage.

The building, which housed both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Development Planning, was badly gutted by flames in the early hours of November 17. Virtually all furniture, computers, official records, and supplies were destroyed.

The European Commission has indicated to the Solomon Islands government that it will pay for renovation of the two story building.
