INJUNCTION SOUGHT TO STOP EVICTION OF MADANG, PNG SETTLERS

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (January 8, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Papua New Guinea ‘s Minister of Justice, Jacob Wama, has sought a restraining order from the National Court in Waigani, Port Moresby, to stop the eviction of Madang settlers from government land.

The resettlement project began Wednesday.

Wama, who also is the Madang Member of Parliament, said the stop order application was filed Tuesday.

Wama flew to Madang Wednesday to brief the Madang Provincial Assembly on his action. He also plans to meeting with the settlers’ representative, John Simbai, to review the situation before the case is heard Friday.

Under the eviction plan, nearly 9,000 squatters from rural Madang and other provinces are to be returned to their home villages, to help alleviate a variety of Madang social problems.
