HONIARA, Solomon Islands (January 7, 1998 - PACNEWS)---The Solomon Islands Ombudsman, Sir Peter Kenilorea, says the Ombudsman's office should be given more power to carry out its work.

At present, he says, it can only make recommendations. To achieve its aims, Sir Peter suggests, the Ombudsman’s office must have the authority to act on its findings.

He also recommends, in order for the office to become fully independent, that the government authorize the Ombudsman to control office expenditures.
