TONGA SEAWEED EXPORTS TO JAPAN INCREASING

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (January 12, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Tongan exports of cladisophon seaweed to Japan last year amounted to more than 400 tons.

Secretary of Fisheries 'Akau'ola says foreign earnings from the industry, for the seven-month June - December 1997 period, had a total value of 600,000 pa'anga ($US341,000), Radio Tonga reports.

Akau’ola says the Horiuchi Company, which purchases the Tongan product for sale in Japan, wants to increase 1998 imports of the seaweed to 1,000 tons.
