TARAWA, Kiribati (January 25, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---The Kiribati government has approved a five-cent (Australian) per kilogram increase in the price local producers are paid for copra. (One kilogram equals 2.2 pounds.)

The increase raises the price paid to 45 cents a kilogram in the Gilbert Group (of islands)and 42 cents a kilogram in the Northern and Southern Line and Phoenix Groups.

The three-cent difference between the Gilberts and the other two island groups is due to higher transportation costs in the Gilberts, Radio Kiribati reports.

Copra is one of Kiribati’s main exports and the primary cash earner for most rural people in the country.
