SUVA, Fiji (January 27, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Fiji's Lautoka Sugar Mill ended its 1997 crushing season this week after grinding 1.1 million tons of cane.

The mill’s general manager, Ram Karan Singh, says this year's crush is expected to produce 122,000 tons of sugar and 60,000 tons of molasses.

The 1997 crushing season, Singh noted, was the worst so far in terms of industrial disputes, quality of cane and mill breakdowns. The mill was plagued by problems, he added, such as the 16-day strike by the Fiji Sugar and General Workers Union over working conditions and pay claims.
