HONIARA, Solomon Islands (February 9, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---While logging companies in the Solomon Islands are experiencing low demand for round logs, the country's largest eco-timber exporter is trying to cope with increased overseas market demand for processed timber.

Soltrust, an eco-timber company which promotes sustainable operations, is experiencing mounting orders from the United States and several European countries, which it is trying to meet.

The Chairman of Soltrust, former Prime Minister Ezekiel Alebua, says he is pleased with the slump in round log export prices and the resulting stockpiling of logs in the Solomons. As a promoter of sustainable forest practices, Alebua says Soltrust welcomes the break in environmentally-destructive practices.

He has continued to encourage local timber resource owners to turn to eco-timber milling for maximum forest resource benefits.
