SUVA, Fiji (February 11, 1998 - Radio Australia)---China has presented Fiji's government with a cash donation of more than $AUS 250,000 ($US 171,000) to upgrade an army hospital in Suva.

The donation was made during this week's two day visit to Fiji by China's Defense Minister, General Chi Haotian, who said, in presenting the funds, that "Fiji and China share extensive common interests in international and regional issues."

General Chi is the second high-ranking Chinese official to visit Fiji this year, but Fiji's Foreign Minister, Berenado Vunibobo, said there is no special significance in the two visits being so close together.

The Chinese Defense Minister and his 18-member delegation are scheduled to leave for New Zealand later today as part of a four-nation tour that also includes Australia.
