COMMONWEALTH WANTS CLOSER LINKS WITH FORUM

SUVA, Fiji (February 10, 1998 - Radio Australia)---The Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has expressed interest in forming closer links with the South Pacific Forum.

Chief Anyaoku met the Acting Secretary General of the Forum, Tony Slatyer, at the Forum headquarters in Suva today.

Twelve of the Forum's 16 member nations also are members of the Commonwealth.

Mr. Slatyer says he welcomes Chief Anyaoku's interest and the question of closer links with the Commonwealth will now be raised within the Forum.

Today's meeting also covered preparations for an international meeting of developing small island states this year to discuss world trade issues.
