PALIKIR, Federated States of Micronesia (February 23, 1998-PIDP/CPIS/ Hulsen)---A state of emergency has been declared throughout the Federated States of Micronesia by President Jacob Nena as a result of severe drought conditions caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon.

As water shortages increase, health officials warn of the potential of hepatitis A breaking out in Pohnpei and dehydration and gastro-intestinal problems becoming prevalent on many FSM islands.

There also is danger of grass and forest fires.

To combat disease outbreaks and increase fire safety, President Nena has authorized the expenditure of disaster relief funds.
