MELBOURNE, Australia (February 25, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Samoa plans to differ from its South Pacific neighbors by being the last to celebrate the arrival of the new millennium.

The government says that while other countries in the region such --including Fiji, Tonga, Kiribati and even Gisborn in New Zealand-- are rushing to be the first to see the new millennium, Samoa will be the last.

Samoa's Ministry of Tourism is organizing a committee of business people to prepare for the end of the millennium celebrations.

The village of Falealupo, at the western end of Samoa, is where all days end. An outcrop of rocks, just off the coast, is regarded by Samoans as the entrance to the underworld. From there, the international dateline, where each day ends, is just over the horizon.
