APIA, Samoa (March 3, 1998 - PACNEWS/Tohi)---Forty-two villages in Samoa have joined a Village Fisheries Management Project organized by the government's Fisheries Division.

Village representatives, with extension staff assistance, have produced plans to manage local fisheries and conserve marine resources on a long term basis, Radio 2AP reports.

Assistant Director of the division, Ueta Faasili, says establishment of the village fisheries management projects is the result of continuing, successful efforts by Fisheries Division extension staff in coastal villages. Their work, he says, ensures that Samoa will continue to enjoy a healthy marine environment and sufficient seafood in future.

Fourteen Fisheries Division staff recently received government certificates recognizing their outstanding work in developing and implementing the national village fisheries management plan.
