PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (March 2, 1998 - Samoa News/Tohi)--- American Samoa’s population has almost doubled during the past 17 years, increasing at a rate of 3.2% per year, which population planners consider very high.

The official U.S. government estimate of the territory’s population is 60,400.

The last formal census counted 47,000 in American Samoa in 1990, preceded by 32,000 recorded in 1980, Samoa News reports.

Among other U.S. island jurisdictions, growth ranges from as low as1.1% in Guam, to as high as 6.2% in the neighboring Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, with the increase attributed mainly to a rise in alien workers from Asia.
