TARAWA, Kiribati (March 8, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Four major importers in Kiribati's capital, Tarawa, have expressed concern about the breakdown of the main crane at Port Betio.

The crane is used to load and off-load containers from barges and container ships.

Abamwakoro Trading Company, Bobotin Kiribati Limited, Kiribati Supplies Company and Fern Tradings all say they have many containers waiting movement as a result of the crane's malfunctioning, Radio Kiribati reports.

The Kiribati Shipping Corporation, which owns the crane, says an expert from Australia has arrived in the country and is working on resolving the problem.

Importers fear that that if the current situation continues, a backlog of containers will still remain piled up on the Port Betio dock when the next container ship arrives.
