PESTS CAUSE HAVOC IN WESTERN SOLOMON ISLANDS

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (March 11, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Pests have swept through the Shortland Islands in the Western Province of Solomon Islands destroying food gardens. And people in the islands are reportedly going hungry because of the severe damage caused, Solomon Islands radio reports.

Agricultural officials have identified the pests as caterpillar larvae and flea beetles.

Shortlands residents are now awaiting a response from the provincial disaster committee concerning their plight, following submission of two separate reports to the government agency.
