TARAWA, Kiribati (March 12 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---A Kiribati seaman returning home for vacation was held for several hours at New York's Kennedy International Airport last week after custom officials found a small gun in his hand baggage.

After questioning, Kamauri Ioteba's gun confiscated and he was instructed to leave New York on the first available flight, Radio Kiribati reports.

South Pacific Marine Service Manager Peter Lange, who recruited Ioteba for work on a German ship, says the incident will not affect Ioteba's employment.

When the seaman arrives in Kiribati, he will be warned of the dangers involved in carrying firearms, Lange added.

Kiribati law prohibits the importation of firearms.
