FISHING IN NAURU’S EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE EXPANDS

YAREN, Nauru (March 15, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Both foreign and domestic fishing activity in Nauru's Exclusive Economic Zone is continuing to expand.

A total of 1,027 metric tons of fish, mostly yellow fin and skip jack tuna, were caught during February by Japanese and United States purse seiners, according to the Nauru Fisheries and Marine Resources Authority's monthly newsletter, Mwinoangan.

The Authority also has begun conducting a daily fish catch survey of local fishermen. Data show that a total of 5,764 kilograms (12,681 pounds) of fish were brought aboard local boats in January, while a substantially higher 20,895 kilograms (41,790 pounds) were caught during February.
