KIRIBATI SUSPECTS DENGUE FEVER EPIDEMIC

TARAWA, Kiribati (March 15 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Kiribati health officials are awaiting confirmation from Australia of a suspected dengue fever epidemic that has resulted in at least 20 persons being hospitalized in the nation’s capital.

The Ministry of Health reports that the suspected victims of the mosquito-borne disease, including two foreigners, are under close observation at Tarawa's Tungaru Central Hospital.

Kiribati's Secretary for Health, Dr. Takeieta Kienene, has urged people to destroy all mosquito breeding grounds and to use mosquito nets when sleeping.
