AMERICAN SAMOA TO BUILD JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (March 15, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Construction of a juvenile detention center near the Correctional Facility at Tafuna in American Samoa will start soon.

The Department of Public Works will build the 16-bed facility, estimated to cost $US 500,000.

U.S. federal grants will be used for the project, which is scheduled to be completed by June.

At present, juvenile offenders are housed in a government housing compound for contract workers situated next to the prison. At one time, they were incarcerated at the Rainmaker Hotel.
