KIRIBATI KAVA DRINKING AFFECTING FAMILY HEALTH AND WELFARE

TARAWA, Kiribati (March 16, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Kiribati, which does not grow kava, is experiencing a deterioration in family health and welfare because of kava drinking.

The officer in charge of the country’s Department of Social Welfare, Nanimatang Karoua, says too many kava drinkers spend more money on buying imported kava and drinking the mild narcotic than saving for future emergencies.

Karoua says, in some cases, kava drinkers begin imbibing early in the evening and continue until dawn. On weekends, some drink kava continuously for 48 hours.

Kava is becoming an excuse, he adds, for some men to avoid family responsibilities, such as fishing and other constructive work.
