NIUE TOURIST ARRIVAL FIGURES INCREASE

ALOFI, Niue (March 18, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Visitors to Niue increased slightly during 1997 - up to an average 35 per week, with 15 of those being bona fide tourists – according to figures released recently by Statistics Niue.

The accommodation industry needs 120 tourists a week to be financially viable, The Niue Economic Review reports.

Holiday makers totaled 810 during 1997, which is 77 more than the previous year. Business and conference visitors increased from 364 to 534.

Statistics Niue says 1,273 stayed in licensed accommodations, although the figures are being challenged by some in the accommodation sector.

The total number of visitors for 1997 was 1,820, compared with 1,522 in 1996.

Polynesian Niue, located between Tonga and the Cook Islands, has a resident population of approximately 2,500.
