EUROPEAN UNION TO PROVIDE US$3.3 MILLION FOR

SUVA, Fiji (March 23, 1998 - Radio Australia)---The European Union says it will provide $US 3.3 million for the upgrading of aviation facilities in the Pacific.

About half the money will be spent on enhancing airport safety and security, and on measures to encourage the commercial operation of airports. The remainder will be used for staff training.

Countries to benefit from the grant are Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Samoa and Vanuatu.

The announcement comes in advance of a May meeting of Pacific aviation ministers, who are expected to discuss aviation technology, changes to airspace management and industry liberalization.
