ALOFI, Niue (March 24, 1998 - PACNEWS)---A national forestry policy plan for Niue, compiled by a policy-making committee comprised of environmental officers, a saw-miller, village officials and private sector representatives will be released this month, The Niue Economic Review reports.

Committee facilitator François Martel, a forestry consultant from Samoa, says Niue has one of the largest natural forest areas in the Pacific per capita (9 hectares). Landowners have the ultimate responsibility for maintaining and protecting forested areas., he added.

Financial support for the Niue planning project was provided by GTZ, a German overseas aid group which focuses on forestry conservation and development in the Pacific region.
