JAPAN FUNDS VANUATU ROAD PROJECT

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (March 26, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Japan has awarded Vanuatu a grant of more than 400 million vatu ($US 3.2 million) to tar seal the main road around the island of Efate, location of the Melanesian country's capital, Port Vila.

The Suva-based Japanese Ambassador to Vanuatu, Jiro Kobayashi, now is in Port Vila to sign a grant funding agreement and discuss the "Efate Ring Road Project" with caretaker Prime Minister Serge Vohor, Radio Vanuatu reports.

The project is among the most significant development programs organized by the outgoing coalition government.

A new coalition government, with Donald Kalpokas as Prime Minister, is expected to take over March 30.
