HONIARA, Solomon Islands (March 29, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---The Solomon Islands government faces the daunting task of providing work for hundreds of jobless people now seeking employment in the Honiara labor market.

Speaking at the opening of a village industries training course in Honiara last week, Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Employment Moses Mose said some 7,000 additional people would be looking for paid employment in Honiara over the next several years and that the figure is likely to increase at an alarming rate.

Mose says the government is aware of the magnitude of the challenge facing the country and therefore is putting in place an action plan to accelerate the development of small businesses.

He says at least 700 new enterprises are needed yearly if the Solomon Islands is to effectively address the Melanesian country's unemployment challenge.
