NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (March 29, 1998 - PACNEWS)---A recent analysis of Tonga's 1996 population census results shows improved educational attainment in the Polynesian kingdom, with 64 percent of all Tongans achieving secondary and tertiary education compared to 57 percent in 1986.

Just two percent of the population had no formal education whatsoever in 1996, a decrease from three percent in the previous census, Radio Tonga reports.

However, only three percent of Tongans in the 50 years and over age group attained either a form seven or tertiary level education, the 1996 census indicates.

Statistics pertaining to the distribution of educational attainment by sex show females dominating both the primary and secondary levels. Tertiary education is dominated by males in all age groups.
