PARIS, France (April 2, 1998 - Radio Australia)---The French government soon will release a report on the number of people who have developed cancer because of French nuclear testing in the South Pacific from 1966 to 1996.

Defense Minister Alain Richard made the announcement in response to a written request from a French parliamentarian.

The report has been completed, he said, but he did not indicate exactly when it will be made public.

The French study is expected to be released together with a report prepared by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which also evaluated the radiation effects of France's Pacific nuclear testing program. The IAEA report is due to be released sometime during the next several weeks.
