PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (April 5, 1994 -PACNEWS/Tohi)---American Samoa Representative Sua Schuster has recommended that the U.S. South Pacific territory's government reduce its work force and payroll.

The government employs far more workers than it needs, Schuster says, and the amount of money spent on salaries far exceeds what the government spends to provide and improve public services, PACNEWS reports.

The legislator says proposed tax hikes will not solve the government's financial crisis unless payroll spending is significantly reduced. The Fono (legislature), he adds, should advise the government to begin laying off workers.

The American Samoa government employs about 4,000 workers and spends $US. 3 million on payroll costs every two weeks.
