HONOLULU, Hawaii (May 6, 1998 - PIDP/CPIS/Ioane)---A Tongan undergraduate student has made a name for himself by almost single-handedly helping the California University of Pennsylvania (CUP) return to the 1998 U.S. Division II college national rugby championship.

Havila Saafi was named MVP--most valuable player--after scoring 10 tries during his team's march to the championship match, reports the CUP student newspaper.

Saafi, a biology major at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, spent Fall semester '97 and Spring semester '98 at CUP as part of the national student exchange program.

The CUP student newspaper reports that the school's rugby team--the Roosterheads--finished sixth out of seven teams last year, before Saafi came.

Saafi has now returned to Hawaii to complete his studies at Hilo.
