FSM CONGRESS REQUESTED TO APPROVE MICRONESIAN SHIPPING AGREEMENT

PALIKIR, Federated States of Micronesia (May 12, 1998-PIDP/CPIS/Hulsen)--- FSM Vice President Jacob Nena says an agreement on Micronesian region commercial shipping has been forwarded to the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia for ratification.

The agreement provides for cooperation among the FSM, the Republic of Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands pertaining to commercial shipping services

An update of a 1974 pact, when the three independent Micronesian nations were part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the renegotiated document continues to provide entry assurance to carriers that provide the greatest benefits to the Micronesian region.

Falcam says, for example, Yap state's location on the shipping route to Palau and Kosrae state's proximity to Ebeye in the Marshalls, require international coordination.
