HONIARA, Solomon Islands (May 19, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---The need to move the national fuel depot out of central Honiara got the attention of officials this week, when the Solomon Islands Port Authority warned of a potential explosion.

The warning was issued after a leaking Shell Company fuel tank began discharging fuel onto the ground along the shoreline Monday, the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Company reports.

Port officials banned smoking and lights in the Point Cruz wharf area, as fumes wafted through the industrial compound.

The Harbor Master's office said there was the potential of the fumes igniting and causing a serious explosion.

The fuel tank facility is close to Honiara's downtown and government center.
