HONIARA, Solomon Islands (May 19, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---The High Court of the Solomon Islands has a new judge. He is Frank Kabui from North Malaita province and a law graduate from the University of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Company reports.

Justice Kabui took his oath of office in Honiara last week before the Governor General, Sir Moses Pitakaka.

He was the first Solomon Islander to be appointed Attorney General and, recently, Chairman of the Law Reform Commission. Justice Kabui has also held a number of legal and judicial appointments as a public officer.

Meanwhile, the President of the Solomon Islands Bar association, Andrew Nori, has called on government to treat the judiciary the same way it treats other government arms.

Welcoming Frank Kabui as the third puisne judge of the High Court, Nori said he was saddened to note that the Solomon Islands Court of Appeal could not sit last month and certain High Court sittings at Auki on Malaita province were not held because of the lack of funds. Nori said government cash-flow should not be an excuse to withhold court sittings when other arms of the government still have money to spend.
