NOUMÉA, New Caledonia (May 21, 1998 - Radio Australia)---New Caledonia's dock strike is continuing, causing disruption to cargo shipping services in the Pacific.

Members of the country's dock-workers' union have blockaded the port of Nouméa, protesting the firing of 49 workers.

The striking workers also are opposed to the merger of two other waterfront unions, which they say will harm their rights.

Several meetings this week between unions and government officials have failed to resolve the dispute.
