DOCK WORKERS LIFT NOUMÉA PORT BLOCKADE

NOUMÉA, New Caledonia (May 22, 1998 - Radio Australia)---Dock workers who have blocked access to the New Caledonian port of Nouméa for a week have called off their strike after reaching agreement on their demands.

The workers were protesting the firing of 49 union members and other labor matters.

The Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency says the agreement ending the dispute was signed after a five-hour meeting initiated by the head of the territorial congress, Harold Martin.

Normal activity at the docks will resume on Saturday.
