NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (May 24, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Niue is exploring the possibility of establishing formal trade links with Tonga.

A six-member trade delegation from Niue, led by the Minister of Travel and Tourism, Aokuso Pavihi, was in Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa, last week to meet with government and private sector representatives.

Pivihi said Niue is interested to importing Tongan vegetables and fruit, as well as other commodities. It would be more economical to buy these goods from Tonga instead of New Zealand, he said, as is done currently.

The Niue representatives are interested in selling handicrafts to Tonga, as well as aggregate stone used in cement.

Pavihi said his talks in Nuku'alofa were encouraging and hoped they will lead to establishment of a formal Niue-Tonga trade link similar to the one now in place between Tonga and Fiji.
